Tier Values - Getting the Best Value for Your Pick

Each time you start a draft, be sure to consider the value of the player you are drafting in relation to their ADP. The goal of any draft is to select players that will either meet or exceed their current valuation, ensuring that you are being rewarded with production commiserate to the pick you spent on said player. As we move closer to Opening Day, I wanted to dive into a couple ADP tiers in order to help you find that value when you are on the clock. For each tier listed below, I have included four types of categories for players currently being selected in that range: Can’t Be Contained: These are players I feel will outperform their current ADP and provide a higher value than expected. Playing the Lotto: Players with higher levels of risk who could pay big dividends or bring a great deal of disappointment for those who draft them. Not Going Anywhere: Steady performers who should easily meet the production of their draft tier. Falling Down the Stairs: Players that will no...

Next Man Up: An early look at future saves

Closers are the most frustrating part of building a fantasy team. How many of you have entered April without a worry about your fantasy pen, only to find yourself sifting through the waiver wire rubble for anything breathing that might net you some saves for your injury ridden or underperforming relievers? The closer position is incredibly volatile, and the one thing you can bet on for the 2018 season is that there will again be a high level of turnover in the closing ranks due to injury or under-performance. Every MLB manager knows this is a possibility for his team, and you can bet that he has an idea of which player would step into the 9 th inning role should something happen to his current relief ace. As a manager yourself, it is very important to also have your “Next Man Up” list ready so that you know who to stash or target as a potential source of saves should the need arise. Once the season begins, keep tabs on which closers are struggling so that you can better identify who ...

Beyond the Top 100: Late Round Pitching Fliers

Every season holds surprise performances from players that no one was considering during their pre-season drafts. Players like Zack Godley burst on the scene last season to provide high-end pitching production for those quick enough to pick them up, and this season will be no different. The hard part always comes in seeing the potential in these players before the breakout happens, which is incredibly difficult to predict. All of these players have their warts, and while I do not expect or suggest that anyone on this list will approach the production seen by Godley last season, I do have a few arms that could be worth a late round flier, or at least deserve further attention, as potential roster adds as we get into the season and pitching injuries start to pile up. Either way, here are three pitchers currently being ignored in most drafts that could surprise this season: Nick Pivetta, Current ADP: 427.17 Nick Pivetta made his MLB debut this past season, struggling to an 8-10 recor...

Beyond the Top 100: SP Who Could Beat their ADP

Pitchers and catchers have finally reported, breaking us out of the monotony of what has been a glacial offseason for baseball on the hot stove side of things. But now we can rejoice that all over Arizona and Florida, spring training facilities are up and running again and we are fast approaching a new fantasy baseball season. In order to celebrate baseball being back, we focus on half of those first reporting to camp: pitchers. This past season was frustrating for fantasy owners everywhere due to an explosion of offense that rendered most pre-season pitching rankings moot. As we enter another draft season, I wanted to point out a few pitchers whose current ADP leaves them outside the Top 100 players overall, but sets them as great values to target for options who should outperform their current draft position: Jon Gray, Current ADP: 156.40 This one almost feels like cheating. Gray’s 2017 season was cut short by a stress fracture in his foot that limited him to only 110.1 inni...

Beyond the Top 100: OF Who Could Beat their ADP

Mock draft season is well upon us, and most of us at this point are familiar with those top performers in the outfield who can secure a strong foundation for any fantasy team as they start a new season. Making the decision to draft an upper tier talent like Mike Trout, Bryce Harper or Mookie Betts is an easy call, and you can be reasonably sure that you will net above average production should you be fortunate enough to land any of those three fantasy studs. While having those top-tier guys can obviously put you one step closer to championship contention, finding value outside of the upper level players in any positional group can be the best way to separate yourself from the field while allowing you to secure stronger players at shallower positions on your squad. With this in mind, here are three outfielders whose ADP is currently outside of the Top 100 that could outperform their current draft position and put you one step closer to bragging rights for the sad, dark months after t...
